Singer Restoration
Earlier this year I picked up a Singer 237 at my local thrift store. Produced in the late 1960s it is apparently one of the last all metal sewing machines produced by Singer (more details here).
My first order of business was testing the motor. It did not run initially so I took it apart to inspect it.
As it is a brush motor, I cleaned up carbon deposits and then it did run.
For the rest of the machine, I used some canned air to get all of the dust out. As well as some vinegar and dish soap to clean everything.
Finally, using the manual, I oiled the machine with Singer machine oil at each of the points required.
Since the carbons needed replacing and the original motor was underwhelming, I opted to replace the motor since I will be using this sewing machine. I'm keeping the original motor in case I ever sell it.
The Singer is singing again!
